This article details what custom emojis are and how to create, manage, use, and remove them.

Package information: Custom Emojis are available to Growth and Enterprise package users.

Permissions: Custom Emojis can be managed by platform admins and users with branding permissions. You can learn more about branding permissions in this article.

What is it?

A custom emoji is a personalized icon that can be added to your Happeo. Unlike standard emojis, which are already integrated into the platform, custom emojis are created by users.

The process of creating and using custom emojis is simple. Users can upload an image file, choose a name for the emoji, and save it. Once created, custom emojis can be used in various places, such as reactions to posts and comments.

Prerequisites

  • You must be an Admin to upload and manage custom emojis
  • For non-Admin users to be able to upload custom emojis, the Admin must allow all users to add custom emojis
    • This toggle can be found in the Admin Settings > Branding > Custom Emojis
  • If no custom emojis have been created, the custom emoji tab in the emoji picker will not be available

Rules

Image file type

  • Square images (20px x 20px)
  • Image sizes under 128KB
  • Images with transparent backgrounds work best
    • You can use image file types such as JPG, PNG, and GIF

What is allowed

  • Numbers
  • Letters (only lower case)
  • _ symbol
  • 30 characters maximum
  • The Admin can replace images of custom emojis

Note: When typing a name for your custom emoji, it will automatically have a colon (e.g.) on either side of the name, as this is the standard name formatting for emojis.

What is supported

Custom emoji support depends on whether you are using Happeo on desktop or in the mobile app.

Desktop (web)

On desktop, custom emojis are fully supported anywhere the emoji picker is available.

You can use custom emojis in:

  • Post reactions
  • Comment reactions
  • Post text
  • Comment text
  • Article text

This allows teams to consistently express tone and context directly within content, not just through reactions.

Note: Custom emojis can be added to post, article, and comment text using the emoji picker in the editor.

What is not supported

Mobile app (iOS and Android)

In the mobile app, custom emojis are currently supported only for reactions.

You can:

  • View custom emojis used in reactions.
  • React to posts and comments using custom emojis.

You cannot:

  • Add custom emojis inside post text, comment text, or article text.
  • Create new custom emojis from the mobile app.

Note: Content-level support for custom emojis (post, article, and comment text) is currently available on desktop only.
